LYNN FECTEAU / ARTIST STATEMENT
I’ve always had a strong connection with nature. As a small child when events would get chaotic in our home, I would literally head for the woods or ocean. I grew up in New Jersey around the shore and I remember going out to sit on my favorite jetty for hours looking out at the sea. My Mother would come looking for me worried that I was a bit weird. Now that I’m older and can reflect on my reasons, I see that I always felt that connection to nature. I was using the natural world to calm and center myself. I still do that. My backyard in Miami is a haven in the city. I have blooming orchids and flowers everywhere. In Colorado we own 35 areas in the remote Rocky Mountains. It is untouched and a wonderful place to be creative. It’s fun to go from one place to the other because they are so different. It shakes up my reality and causes me to open myself to more possibilities. Our place in Colorado is an hour from electricity and city conveniences, things we all take for granted in America. Our neighbors are just as unconventional as the environment. Miami of course is a huge city with a population explosion. There is never a dull moment there. I tell you about these two places because that’s what defines my art and who I am.
When I paint I am always aware of this interconnectedness between everything and hope it unfolds into my work so that people become aware of it too.
Watching television I saw a Nova Special on PBS about a new concept called the “String Theory”. Physicists have found an electric current (shaped like a string) in the smallest particles that form everything on earth. That program gave me quite a jolt because it confirmed my philosophy that everything in our world is connected on a basic level. We in our modern world need to remember about our connections to people and nature.
When I paint I become so focused on what I am doing that everything else melts away.
My husband complains that I don’t hear him when I’m working and it’s true. I get into a very meditative state. All the nuances of a flower can consume me for days. The beauty of patterns that comprise nature overwhelm me at times. I love to try and capture them on canvas and hope to pass that on in my paintings.
There was never a time in my adult life when I didn’t create art. It is a gift that I like to share. I donate many of my paintings to projects that
I hope makes a positive difference in our world.
This year, I was honored to participate in a fundraiser for Breast Cancer. I created a sculpture of a bra with broken mirrors and the growth of new vines and flowers. The piece was called “Shattered Images”. For the last two years I have had an art opening to raise money for a children's museum called The Marjorie Stoneman Douglas Nature Center on Key Biscayne Fla. They offer educational services for protecting the marine environment. The ocean is something very close to my heart. Another organization that I’ve worked with is named Shake-A-Leg. Although it has a strange name it is another wonderful organization that takes disabled and at risk adults and children and instructs them on how to sail consequently giving them confidence and independence in their lives. I am also a member of The Villagers, which is dedicated to preserving historic landmarks in South Florida.
My Hope is that I can prompt a sense of joy and tranquility in all the folks who own one of my paintings.” Lynn Fecteau
