This flower grows in my garden thanks to my good friend and mentor for years Alice Dickerson. She was a
real pioneer woman who lived her life in the mountains of Colorado with her family and then later just with her sister Helen. At an elevation of 8,600ft, gardening is quite tricky and Alice knew all the tricks and
taught them to me. I would go visit Alice and Helen often and as I came through the door I would be met with the smell of fresh baked bread. They cooked a few loaves everyday for themselves and visitors
who stopped by to sit and chat. I would have a cup of coffee and slices of hot bread with lots of butter at their huge kitchen table and listen to their stories about mountain life. Evenually, weather permitting
Alice would grab a shovel and some cardboard boxes and we would head out to their larger then life garden. They grew all the food that they ate all winter long and stored it all in a root cellar connected to the
back part of their home. Alice loved sharing her plants with me, maybe because she had no children and I wanted a garden just like hers.
Alice passed away some time ago but her flowers live on in my garden and paintings. Anyway that’s how I came to grow Oriental Poppies in my garden.
